“And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
Romans 10:15 NIV
Dear Minster and Friends,
There is a lot of talk about beauty in our culture – and it is usually about the surface of things. Beauty in the eye of the beholder, or in the face or physique of the beholden.
But in the thoughts of God – here in Romans, quoting Isaiah – it is the feet that come in for special attention. It was the feet of the disciples that Jesus washed. It was the feet of Jesus bathed in tears and perfume from a forgiven woman. Why?
These beautiful feet are about direction, perseverance and purpose.
You imagine someone comes with long awaited good news- a prisoner falsely imprisoned is released, a town liberated by oppressors, a lost child is found alive and healthy. The messenger who brings such news- even heir dirty, bruised and spiked feet- the feet that brought this news to you. They are beautiful – you might want to kiss those feet for bringing such welcome news, and you wouldn’t care what anyone else thought.
And the footsteps in the sand, that marked this progress – would also seem worthy of special attention.
The place of Christians in the world, whether they consider themselves specifically to be evangelists, or just simple relayers or welcome news – is that we are people with beautiful feet.
May your feet be beautiful this week- your progress and purpose at home or at work- be marked as those whose footsteps in the hall bring blessing to those you meet.
This is my prayer for you today- wherever you are- and especially if you are not feeling so ‘beautiful’ – to allow the word of God to redefine your beautiful in 2020.
With every blessing,
