Read & Consider
Read Joshua 4.20-24
Joshua lays out the twelve stones in Gilgal as a reminder of the miracle that God has performed for the Israelites in allowing them to pass over the Jordan. He then tells the Israelites to let their descendants know what God has done for them, which would show them that God’s work did not begin with them and be a reminder of God’s miracle.
The stones marked out the movement of God among his people. However, they also testified to the willingness of the Israelites to step into the water and trust that God would cut off the flowing water.
Joshua reminds the Israelites that the same God that helped them cross the Jordan also parted the Red Sea, highlighting that God is the same yesterday, today and for ever.
