Read & Consider
Read Exodus 15:26
The Israelites had just lived through the liberation that would mark them out as God’s special people. They had witnessed God’s humiliation of their enemies and the drowning of the most powerful army in the world in a sea they had crossed on dry land. Imagine the atmosphere of joy and wonder! (v1-21). After walking for 3 days without finding water they arrive at an oasis but the water turns out to be undrinkable (v23). Their reaction? Grumbling against the leader! (v24) Moses’ reaction? (v25) He cried for help to the Lord who provided the immediate solution and showed them who was their source of life, health and blessing – “I am the LORD, your healer”. Then He took them to Elim, the real oasis (v27).
Over to you
- A spirit of submission to and delight in hearing and obeying God’s Word (Psalm 19:7-11)
- The Church as it proclaims the Good News of Jesus Christ in the current Wilderness
- Hope, joy and resilience as you face trials “of various kinds” (James 1:2)
Do frustration or disappointment make us cry out to the Lord for help, or grumble against him in bitterness?
Let God’s Word shape your reaction to the uncertainties and confusion of these days.
Optional extra Family activity
Imagine you are with your family on a journey in that desert with the Israelites, having escaped from Egypt. What noises can you hear? What can you smell? Which part of your body would hurt? Draw a picture of the first thing you would want when you got to the oasis.
