Time to Reveal the Wisdom of God
Dear Minster and Friends,
“To those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:24
As the holidays draw close it may be that the course of the last few weeks at work, or in studies, has left you requiring extra wisdom and understanding. In our Sunday Sermon series over the last few months we have been exploring the applications from the book of proverbs, and we are about to fold our preaching series into the rhythm of the wider church as we celebrate Easter at Latimer Minster.
Good Friday and Easter Sunday fall on the ancient festivals of Passover where, since the time of Moses, the people of God have celebrated the sacrificial lamb, who bore the weight of death and which led to the emancipation of Israel and the start of the adventure from Egypt to the promised land. For hundreds of years this festival wasn’t just a moment of joy, but a defiant declaration that the wisdom of God is not always the same as the wisdom of our strong and efficient cultures – our Egypts. Easter is when we remember we are a pilgrim people, born to be set free, born to live free, loving and worshipping God, loving and serving our neighbours and fuelled by a higher cause and a deeper sense of loyalty than the thin wisdom of our workplaces. It is when we consciously remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
May I invite you then to press pause on the frenetic pace of life, to press the off switch for a little while, reboot and re-seek the wisdom of God this Easter. Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God and, for those of us who come to him, he can be our wisdom, our insight and understanding, our coach and our mentor too. Over the days running up to Easter Sunday, and on Easter Sunday itself, it is as if for a few moments we change our pace and try a few days in his race, a few days consciously walking through the steps to calvary, the grave and beyond.
I look forward to walking this part of the journey together.
With much love,
