Wisdom Amongst the Waves of Foolishness

Dear Minster and Friends,

“The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behaviour, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young – let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance – for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise.”   ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭1:1-6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Sometimes it is good to hold the familiar up against the wonderful words of God. I wonder how we would start a book of proverbs for the selfie generation?

“The vacuous sayings of minor celebs and self-appointed lifestyle coaches, vloggers and instagrammers, brought to you exclusively to show what is going on in their carefully curated lives:
– for those of you who are ill-educated and ill-behaved you now live in an era where presidents tweet and princes dab, politicians want to lead us but cannot lead themselves…
so feel the wind in your hair like a California Barbie with her pouting Ken,
surf the fake news sites,
fish in the sea of articles with click bait, ride the waves of indignation
and may Pinterest be your guide in all important matters.” #trudat #truth #IMHO #yolo

As we start to plot and chart our way through this year we may well find many things competing for our attention, competing for our focus. Instead may we consider a year where we focus on growing in wisdom, discretion and character.

We have a chance to do this through a number of avenues; every Sunday we have sermons which will be pursuing Wisdom – for the next few weeks through the book of Proverbs.

Monday evenings will be providing some input over the next few months, and there are Minster communities also up and running which you can join if neither of these two options work for you.

For those who want to explore or refresh their faith we are running a short Alpha course – one evening a week, starting on 22nd January. Email contact.us@latimerminster.org to register or talk to one of the team to find out more.

And starting on Monday nights from mid-February we are bringing a Minster School of Discipleship course, which will be an evening every month and will allow you to develop habits and insight that will deepen your understanding of God and how to live with wisdom in our bewildering world. You will be placed in a group and will journey together with Tash, Dan and other pastors and church members. It will be a great series of evenings which will cover carefully chosen topics and is guaranteed to develop not only your faith but also help you navigate key issues you may be facing in your life.
To book your place email jane.overnell@theminster.org
Also to find out more grab Tash Edwards or Dan Joy at a service or meet them for a coffee or a pint some time over the next few weeks.

I’m personally excited about this emphasis for how we can grow together over the next few months and look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

With much love,

Prayer request

Please do continue to pray for our progress as we seek planning permission for a new permanent oak barn-style church building. We were meant to have had a response in September, but Council have been restructuring which has led to extensive delays and we are at a crucial stage of responding to queries. We would like permission to be given in February and will keep you updated when we are given a planning committee date. For those of you who love the tent (and there are many of us) there will be no sudden changes and we will be meeting in a tent on Sundays until the entire project is completed – a process which may take some time.
